Windows 10 is an ongoing service. There are regular core and feature updates to help users enhance their Windows experience. These updates flawlessly help to handle everything ranging from useful features to critical functions as expected. Unfortunately, there are some big bends and twists that disallow the Windows update. The update failure is not often for some random reason.

Common reasons why the window updates fail

Low storage

Low storage may hinder some system functions, which must not be ignored. The functions of a critical system can stop working partially or completely when there is a lack of storage. Windows update is a function that can discontinue if it detects low storage on your PC.

Window updates need some storage for downloading the files. These files are installed when your PC is restarted and the updater is run. Lack of storage space means updated files cannot be downloaded leading to installation failure.

Solution – Before updating the OS, ensure there is sufficient storage space.

Multiple updates in a line

MS Window updates are frequent. Therefore the OS is consistently refreshed with every new update. From individual features to the core functions, monthly updates carry new aspects. Besides, there are some fixed issues based on community reports. Updates are of two types –

  1. Addresses core system modules.
  2. Addresses feature assembled on these core modules.

When multiple updates are in a queue, you will first have to install those designed to enhance critical system modules. Windows is a component-based operating system, so different modules need maintenance. Therefore component handling the updates needs regular servicing.

Solution – If you regularly update there are no concerns about failed updates down the road.

Driver conflicts

The operating system manages different hardware parts that are connected via drivers. Drivers are essential and can cause conflicts. For example, GPU drivers may not be compatible with your RAM. Thus it can trigger issues ranging from system instability or failed updates to even system failure.

Solution – Update drivers to the latest version and avoid conflict.

Corrupt system files

System files are needed for an operating system to function. A single corrupt file can trigger a major issue for the whole Window OS. It includes update failure.

Solution – Run DISM [Deployment Image Servicing Scan] first to identify the component store issue and resolve it. The next step is to run SFC [System File Checker] scan if an update fails.

Disobedient windows update service

The role of the Windows Update Service is to check, download, and install the updates automatically. If it does not run then updates can stall or fail. OS displays a message that Windows Update is currently not running, so updates cannot be checked. It means updates will not be downloaded or installed.

Solution – Restart the service manually in safe mode and delete the update cache. Now, restart the computer!

Window updates keep the operating system healthy. Regular updates introduce new features, fix bugs as well as enhance security. Therefore, keep everything updated and ensure to have sufficient free storage space.
